I went to my first bellydance class in 1997.
18 years is a long time. Since then I’ve been a general election candidate, got married, bought a house, had two children, lost two stones in weight, run ten marathons, had a complete change of career, become self employed, and more recently, taken up Crossfit and got my first ever Saturday job.
And throughout all of these life-changing experiences, I’ve always been a bellydancer. So there must be something pretty special about bellydance for me to stick with it through all these life changes.
I love being part of a welcoming, inclusive community.
I love always trying to combine the technical and the emotional aspects of the dance.
I love the constant struggle of trying to interpret another culture, relate it to my own, and express it in my own way.
I love the sparkles and colours and fabrics and movement of the costumes and accessories.
This dance loves me no matter my body shape, my mood, or the stage I’m at in my life.
This dance lets me be myself and express myself, even if sometimes I’m not sure who that is.
This dance lets me lose myself in music and find something new each time I do.
This dance has given me the chance to meet so many wonderful women and learn so much from them.
I am grateful for the continued bellydance in my life and pray that it will be with me for many years to come!
